10 Most Effective Natural Remedies for Kidney Stone

Ananya entered the clinic with a severe left side pain and less urination so I suggested her to get her sonography. When she received she found out that she had multiple kidney stones in both her kidneys! She came to my clinic again and this is the conversation that we had. I hope it helps you.

Dr Nidhi: Aren’t you drinking enough water?

Ananya: I drink around 5-6 glasses of water Doc, not more than that as I don’t feel that thirsty.
Along with drinking water, I also eat well and am very conscious about my health.

Dr Nidhi: Listen, when minerals and salts present in food tend to crystallise in the kidney they create hard deposits called kidney stones. Although they get formed in the kidney, they can affect the urinary tract as well.

Ananya: Why is that?

Dr Nidhi: Passing a kidney stone is often considered extremely painful and thus, patients seek holistic health treatments. But don’t worry kidney stones are a common problem these days due to sedentary lifestyle and eating junk and processed food more on regular basis.
Unfortunately, people who have got them once are more prone to get them again. For your kidney stones try these natural remedies for relief besides Homeopathic constitutional medicine which will prevent further formation of stones and help to break it faster.

A glass of water

Have more than 12 glass of water in a day as staying hydrated is one of the easiest ways to treat and prevent kidney stones. You should always pay attention to the colour of your urine – Dark yellow is a sign of dehydration – one of the risk factors for kidney stones.

Ananya: Twelve Glasses! That’s a lot.

Dr Nidhi: (chuckles) it’s needed. Today the AC environment may not get us thirsty enough to drink twelve glasses of water but our body needs it to carry the necessary body functions.
If you don’t like plain water, there are so many things that you can add that will change its flavor and keep you hydrated.

A jar of water with lemon, coriander leaves, mint leaves and lemon

Make a detox water for your kidneys by putting coriander leaves, mint leaves and half lemon juice to one liter water which you can sip whole day . Coriander and mint leaves clean our system from all the heavy metals and lemon works like an antibiotic to protect the mechanism.

Ananya: I like the idea of mint leaves. I shall definitely try it.

Dr Nidhi: It’s not just mint leaves there are so many other things that you can drink that will help you fight the kidney stones. For example

coconut water

Coconut water is one of the healthiest drinks and is considered to be good for the dissolution of kidney stones. You can have it in daytime around half an hour before or after meals. It is also found effective in relieving the burning sensation during urination.
These are the things that you can get your hands on easily and that will benefit you a lot.

Water with tulsi leaves

Tulsi ( Basil leaves ) is very effective in balancing  the fluid, mineral and uric acid balance in the kidney. Have Tulsi leaves a few times a day as tea, juice or with honey. This will help in expelling kidney stones from the urinary tract.

Ananya: These are amazing remedies doc, I thought you would suggest a list of distasteful juices of exotic plants but coconut water and tulsi leaves, I can have it all day long.

Wheatgrass juice

Dr Nidhi: That’s great! If you like the tulsi leaves, you also want to try Wheatgrass Juice that has to be consumed on an empty stomach so that it boosts urine production. This allows your stones to pass easily and reduces their future formation.

Ananya: I shall try it at your bidding Doc.

Dr Nidhi: Wonderful! Now there are some things that you can have to break the stone formation.

Apple cider

Take one tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar half an hour before meals to break the stone formation. It contains citric acid that may help dissolve calcium deposits.

Ananya: I can have apple cider, I kind of like it.

Dr Nidhi: Ok we have discussed fair amount of fluids now let’s see the things that you must eat in order to help your situation.

Kulthi dal, horse gram

Kulthi dal or horse gram can be soaked into water for one hour and then you can prepare it as you prepare any other grams or dal. Have it every alternate day to excrete the kidney stones faster.

Ananya: I hope I can add a little flavor to the horse gram; it’s a pain to eat it plain.

Dr Nidhi: Yes of course, just don’t make it too spicy otherwise it will affect your stomach.

Ladyfinger soaked in water

Ladyfinger or okra can be soaked overnight in water and eaten first thing in the morning to reduce the formation of stones.

Ananya: I shall give it a try (she said halfheartedly)

Dr Nidhi: I know it doesn’t sound that appealing but it’s rich in magnesium and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that prevent the crystallisation of chemicals in the kidney thus making it an excellent remedy for kidney stones.
(Ananya noded)
Now let’s look at the things that you must avoid eating.

Ananya: Here comes the difficult part.

Dr Nidhi: (laughs) it might be a little difficult on you but it will be super easy on you kidneys

Ananya: Ok Doc, shoot.

junk food

Dr Nidhi: Avoid unhealthy foods like sugar, processed foods, sugary drinks, sodas, alcohol, black tea and chocolate. Reduce the intake of milk, meats, eggs and poultry which are likely to increase the amount of acid in urine.

Ananya: That’s almost all of it Doc. There is hardly anything left for me to eat.

Dr Nidhi: There are so many things that you can eat as an alternative such as whole wheat bread, vegetables, pulses and sprouted grains; all these foods are a great source of proteins, nutrients and fibres that reduce the risk of kidney stone formation.

Ananya: Ohh, I am so focused on fancy dishes that I almost forget this whole other section of food.

salt

Dr Nidhi: Along with the above mentioned foods you must also reduce salt intake in your diet to prevent kidney stones formation. If you eat a lot of sodium which is an ingredient in salt it raises the amount of calcium in your urine. So limit canned foods, packaged meats, fast foods on a day to day basis.

Ananya: Ok, I haven’t been a fan of can foods so I can easily avoid that.

Dr Nidhi: Great! You follow these steps regularly and your kidney stones will as good as gone.
So this was our conversation, Ananya went home and followed all the remedies quite religiously. I soon heard that she was rapidly recovering from her kidney stones.
Holistic health treatments protect you from the harmful side effects of loads of medicines and laser treatments which are needed to remove kidney stones. You can always check with a doctor at an integrated healthcare in Pune centre and take the necessary steps to treat and prevent kidney stones.Word of caution - All the above remedies can’t be used by all so consult a doctor before trying it.

Natural Remedies for Constipation

Myra - a pretty little angel enters my clinic with severe bloating and a complaint of stomach ache! When I asked her mom, Anita, here is what she had to say
Anita: I am really worried Doctor, Myra hasn’t passed motions for two days now. It has been a problem with Myra since her birth.
Dr Nidhi: Don’t worry Anita, constipation is a common problem all across the globe and can be a result of your lifestyle choices, medications, food you eat or avoid and also due to certain diseases.
Anita: But I have been very particular about her diet. Even if we eat outside, I make sure she eats healthy. Her older brother does not listen and eats whatever he wants but he never had such a problem. I am scared if Myra’s condition will worsen with time.
Dr Nidhi: As far as her brother is concerned, different bodies react differently to their surroundings. Talking about Myra’s condition I think it is not that bad. Less than three bowel movements per week is characterized as constipation. While sometimes it may be chronic, other times it can occur occasionally. I can understand it’s uncomfortable for her and it has disrupted her play routine. (Myra smiled)
After examining Myra I gave her constitutional homeopathic medicine for getting relief from her symptoms.
Dr Nidhi: Along with this medicine I would also suggest some healthy lifestyle changing tips so that Myra can live a medicine free life!
Anita: That would be great Doctor. Are there any natural remedies we can opt for?

A kid drinking water

Dr Nidhi: Yes, there are many natural remedies you can try if you don’t want to take over the counter medicines. Main concentration needs to be on drinking more water. Dehydration can make you constipated. Myra should have at-least two liters of water daily.
Anita: She doesn’t drink water, Doctor. Even after a meal she drinks a sip or two and that’s it.
Dr Nidhi: Try to hydrate her body every hour by making her drink one glass of water especially when she is in an air conditioned environment. The next thing you can do is give her lots of dietary fibre.

oats, flax seeds, chia seeds, lentils, prunes and raisins
Consider giving her oats, flax seeds, china seeds, lentils, prunes and raisins for relief.
Anita: She likes raisins. She won’t eat flax seed.
We both looked at Myra as she smiled back at us shyly.
Dr Nidhi: Ok, even soaked raisins overnight work wonders for stomach. Vegetables like broccoli and spinach are great sources of fiber too - give them in form of soup in this winter season to get the optimum result. And also it’s far better than eating broccoli as a vegetable.
 Anita: That could work.

Warm water with half lemon and honey

Dr Nidhi: The soups will keep her bowel movements on track. But just in case for occasional constipation problems you can give her warm water with half lemon and one teaspoon honey which can help in putting her system back on track. Lemon acts as a stimulant and flushes out toxins while honey works as a mild laxative.
Anita: That could come to our rescue on our trips and tours.

A girl running with her mother

Dr Nidhi: Along with proper diet she must also exercise. It’s said that movement of the body is necessary for bowel movement. Try taking her for regular walks or outdoor activities to reduce the symptoms of constipation. Pranayama too has a great role in relaxing stomach muscles.
Anita: She hasn’t always been very athletic but I guess I can take her on morning walks with me. It will give me a reason to start walking again.

castor oil vs ghee with milk)

Dr Nidhi:  Oils are good laxatives that help in cleaning the intestines and also promote bowel movements. You can give her one tea spoon of castor oil on an empty stomach and wait for 8 hours to see its magic!
I could see Anita’s face contorting; she knew her daughter would not like the smell of castor oil. Hence I gave them an alternative.
Dr Nidhi: If castor oil is unacceptable you can give her warm milk with one tablespoon ghee at bedtime to have a happy morning.
Anita: Thank you Doctor, I know I would have a pretty hard time giving her castor oil. She likes ghee that won’t be a problem for her.
Dr Nidhi: Does she like yogurt?
(Myra Nodded)
Dr Nidhi:  Make a proper balance between Prebiotic and Probiotic. Yogurts are an excellent Probiotic. They are full of good bacteria. Prebiotics are banana , artichokes , garlic , asparagus, barley, apples  etc . Probiotics can be found in fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, and yogurt. You must regularly consume prebiotics and probiotics for good bowel movements.
Anita: She loves fruits and yogurt so I don’t think we will have problem over there.

cheese, pork, bread, fried food, spicy food

Dr Nidhi: These remedies along with medicines would do wonders for her. During constipation please avoid eating cheese, pork, bread, fried food and spicy food as it can further cause trouble for the bowel movements.
Anita: Thank you Doctor. I was worried about her but now with all the things that you have recommended I think she won’t have a problem with her stomach anymore.
Dr Nidhi: Having a healthy gut is the key to build a strong immune system. It also helps you focus on your life without having to worry about the symptoms and pain. If you’re seeking any help with your symptoms, opt for integrated healthcare in Pune for long-term benefits.

Natural Remedies for Pharyngitis

Alifiya, an IT professional, entered my clinic with a complaint of severe pain in throat and wanted a respite ASAP. I calmed her down and began the conversation by taking her history. Here’s how our conversation proceeded.

Dr Nidhi: Have you eaten anything spicy or junk food or are you allergic to anything?

Alifiya: Yes, I’m allergic to dust and few food items such as milk and pineapple. Do you think it’s because of the allergy? I am really having a hard time dealing with it. Due to the pain, dryness, and irritation in my throat, I’m not able to swallow food.

Although at first it looked like an allergy, after a thorough examination I diagnosed that it was pharyngitis. This condition is quite common since winters are here and sitting in an AC environment does aggravate dryness in the throat. Besides giving her Homeopathic sweet pills I told her to use some home remedies as well to get a faster recovery.

Here are the things that I suggested her that are really effective in the case of pharyngitis.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar in warm water with honey

Mix one spoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of warm water, add some honey and drink it once a day on an empty stomach to give a protective layer to your throat. ACV works magical due to its anti-bacterial anti-fungal and anti-viral properties in this weather.

2. Salt Water

salt water for gargling

Gargling with hot or warm salt water is one of the first things that the elders suggest for the soreness and are right to do so. Salt water can help in treating your sore throat and kill the pharyngitis causing bacteria. Mix one tea spoon of salt or sea salt in a glass of warm water and gargle with this solution three times in a day.

3. Honey

honey in warm water, star anise

One of the most trusted remedies for pharyngitis, honey works better for upper respiratory infections compared to other over-the-counter medicines. Mix a teaspoon of honey in warm water, add some lemon pinch of star anise powder and drink it slowly. Keep drinking this throughout the day till your condition improves.

4. Turmeric

turmeric in milk

Turmeric being a powerful antiseptic and anti-inflammatory doctor from our kitchen can be used with milk at bedtime for a quick recovery. The Golden latte, as the world calls it, works magically on throat problems.

5. Garlic

garlic oil in water

The active compound allicin in Garlic makes it work like an antibiotic. You can mix garlic oil in water and gargle for instant relief. You can also make tea with garlic, cinnamon and pepper. Consume fresh garlic pieces like a cough drop and crush the garlic between your teeth to release its allicin for best results.

Alifiya was very happy to know that all these prescriptions can be made and consumed in the comfort of her home.

Alifiya: Thank you doctor, I already feel better and I am trying all of it the moment I reach home. This is great!

Dr Nidhi: Wonderful! But all these things would work if you follow a small set of instructions. They are as follows.

Things to Keep in Mind:

1. Chicken soup can also offer relief to a sore throat.
2. Make sure you drink water several times in a day to stay hydrated. You can drink warm water for some relief.
3. Avoid smoking and tobacco products. Also, ensure you’re not passive smoking.
4. Try to get ample of rest to recover quickly.
5. You can also drink chamomile tea and peppermint tea for better healing.

Alifiya: I will follow the instructions like a ritual doctor.

Dr Nidhi: (Chuckles) Very well.

Alifiya did follow all the instructions and got well very soon. The holistic health care has always aimed at a natural way of healing. Hence when you choose integrated healthcare in Pune over medicines, you can find relief for a long-term without any side-effects.

I hope this blog was helpful for you.

Natural Remedies for Viral Fever

One of my best friends Sujata who would always come up with something funny to say and crack me up, sounded very strange when she called me a couple of weeks ago. Her voice was weak, trembling and coarse. I instantly knew the cause of it. I asked her to come over as soon as possible. Her husband drove her to my clinic. When I saw her, she appeared weaker than what I imagined from her voice. She was suffering from viral fever, which is a pretty common in monsoon.

It's very easy to detect viral fever, just check for the following symptoms: sore throat, body pain, cough, and a runny nose. Sometimes, the fever can also lead to diarrhoea and vomiting.  I am sharing our discussion during which I recommended her some natural remedies which worked very well for her. I hope it helps you too.

Dr Nidhi : So Sujata, how are you feeling?

Sujata : First I had a sore throat and I knew I would be suffering from cold so I took few precautions but I soon got a temperature and lost all the strength in my body. What do you think it is?

Dr Nidhi: It's viral fever.

Sujata: Oh dear, is it contagious. I am worried about my kids.

Dr Nidhi: If proper precautions are not taken, it can pass on to your kids.
First of all make sure that the handkerchief that you use for coughing and clearing your nose is properly disinfected. Make sure that no one comes too close to you and your bed sheets and clothes are regularly changed. This will prevent the germs from affecting any of your family members. For the germs inside you here are some natural remedies.

tulsi leave tea

1. Tulsi Leaves

Their anti-bacterial and antibiotic properties make Tulsi leaves an effective solution for viral fever. Boil some tulsi leaves in clean water, add half a spoon of clove powder and let the solution boil till the water shrinks to half. Drinking this mix at regular intervals can help you to fight off the infection faster.

coriander tea

2. Coriander Tea

It definitely sounds soothing to drink tea when you’re down with cold and fever. If you can make tea with coriander seeds, you’ll be surprised at how effectively it can boost your immune system too. Coriander seeds contain vitamins, antibiotic compounds and potent volatile oils, which help in reducing the symptoms of your viral infection. You can add one tablespoon of coriander seeds to one glass of water, boil it and allow it to cool. Strain the water and add sugar for a healthy and curing tea.

fenugreek water

3. Fenugreek Water

Commonly available ingredients in the kitchen, Methi seeds are a reservoir of medicinal compounds that have the capabilities to treat viral fever and other infections. If you want to opt for holistic health care, fenugreek seeds are a great solution for a healthy body. Soak one tablespoon of seeds in half a cup of water overnight. In the morning, strain the solution and drink the water at regular intervals. You can also add some lemon or honey to the water for added benefits.

Ginger and honey

4. Ginger and Honey

If you want some instant relief from the symptoms of viral fever, ginger is a magic ingredient due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Consume dry ginger along with some honey and you’ll feel much better in no time. You can also make tea with ginger and honey to feel better.

neem leaves

5. Neem

Neem has been used for holistic health care in traditional medicine and has countless benefits. Though all parts of the Neem tree are useful for holistic health treatments, the bark is considered most effective to treat viral fever.

Sujata: Thank you doctor. I was so worried about this disease. People say strange things about high power medicines and drowsy cough syrups but your remedies are so easy to make and administer.

Dr Nidhi: That's the beauty of integrated healthcare in Pune; it gives you relief without the risk of any side-effects. These natural remedies offer instant relief and keep your body feeling better and healthy for the long term. They also help in enhancing our immune system so that we are less prone to catch these infections in the future.
Sujata recovered rapidly during the next week. Thanks to her loving and caring family who followed all the instructions and kept her warm. This is how with simple home based remedies you can cure something as serious as viral fever.
I hope this information was useful to all of you.

Positive Parenting Tips to Help Your Kid's Aggression

Are you baffled by your child’s aggressive behavior? Though it might be one of the toughest phases to face as a parent, you should know that you’re not alone. Only yesterday I come across a family who was going through this same hassle. Fortunately, their belief in holistic health treatments brought them to me. As tough as it may seem, I think that with just a few simple tips you can try to control your child’s rage.

We all have heard that children can be aggressive at times. But when your angel suddenly starts to hit, push or growl at others, it is natural to be concerned. In this blog I shall reveal, through the conversation I had with the family at my clinic an integrated healthcare in Pune, some useful tips to keep your kids expression in control.

Mr Narayan: His fits of anger are growing with every passing day. Earlier he used to get angry in the cute childish way like all the children do. But he would also quickly succumb to our cajoling and be cheerful again. However recently, he is angry for a longer period and has also started to break things.

an angry kid

Dr Nidhi: I would ask you to Recognize the Reasons behind the Aggression, Research suggests that one of the primary emotions behind aggression is a feeling of helplessness. If your kid is directing his aggression towards you, maybe you are exercising too much control over your child. I don’t mean this in a negative way. Your control may come out of love and you always wish to assure his safety hence he keep regulating every aspect of his life.

Mrs Narayan: Yes doctor you’re right; because we tend to get a little paranoid about his safety we tend to impose a lot of restriction. So how should we remedy this?

Dr Nidhi: You can try giving your child more power by choice as your relationship can benefit immensely from this freedom. When children are aggressive towards other children, it is because they can’t express their feelings to get what they want. The key is to teach them to express their desires without resorting to means like hitting or yelling.

Mr Narayan: Indeed, we should give him more choices. But, what about his behavior doctor?

a mother talking to her kid

Dr Nidhi: Once you accept their feelings, the behaviors are automatically curbed. When our kids get angry, it is important to first acknowledge their feelings. One of the best ways of diffusing negative emotions is to recognize them. For instance, a simple sentence like, “You look really upset” can make a big impact.

If you can catch your kid’s emotion when they are getting upset, make sure to let them know that you understand how they feel. However, it is important to note that even though you empathize with their feelings, you don’t agree with their behaviour.

I would like you to ask a question, do you hit your kid?

Mr Narayan: Occasionally when he gets impossible, he leaves no other option. I know it’s not right, but it’s really hard to see him like that and not be able do something about.

a father hitting his kid

Dr Nidhi: I understand but you should always Use Your Words, Not Your Hands. It can be easy to slip into the trap of using your hands to regulate your child’s behaviour. However, the minute you do so, you’re teaching them exactly the opposite of what you want to.

Rather, use your words so they know that there are other tools like words available to portray anger and you don’t always have to hit or scream. For example, if your child has hit you, say ‘Ouch, no hitting. You seem really angry about something. Please tell me in words.’ This conveys that you care about their feelings but you won’t be a victim of physical violence.

Mrs Narayan: I do the ‘Ouch, no hitting’ part but not quite often.

a mother talking to her kid

Dr Nidhi: Well Consistency is the Key. It can be exhausting to be a positive parent to an aggressive child. However, remember that consistency is an important step for the holistic health care of your little one.

Children can be confused if you are okay when they push their friend one day and get really mad when they do it the next time. Make sure you have established certain ground rules and you stick with them at all times. Always be consistent when he misbehaves and try to set an example with our own positive behaviour.

Mr & Mrs Narayan: Thank you doctor this has been really great. We didn’t know there were so many things that we were doing wrong, no wonder our kid was getting angrier by the day. We shall do everything that you have suggested.

So, how do you think the conversation went? Did it help you identify the places where you were going wrong. Let me know what you think about it.

Lastly, you can also prevent future aggression by helping children balance their good hormones. Holistic health treatments encourage skipping, jumping, swimming, bouncing a ball, jumping, etc. Managing aggressive behavior is a tough and time-consuming job.

You will need the support of your friends and family and experts so that your child is calmer and happier. If you still can’t manage your child’s aggressive behavior, it may be time to consult his paediatrician or a holistic health care specialist for other solutions. 8 Natural Remedies for PCOD

As soon as Lavanya entered my clinic with her mother, I could feel that something was an issue – she was an 18 year old girl weighing 80 Kgs and breathless from a walk from her car to my clinic. She even stopped to catch her breath in the middle of our discussion which alarmed me even more.
Lavanya was suffering from PCOD.

It is one of the most common occurrences in women. According to a research one in every 10 women is suffering from PCOD today. It stands for Polycystic Ovary Disorder; or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). The term implies the formation of multiple cysts in the ovaries. Although it’s a hormonal disorder and the exact cause of this disease is hitherto unknown, it can be treated with holistic health care.
Over the years I have treated teenagers, newly married and middle aged women suffering from PCOD with my integrated healthcare in Pune.
It often takes time to understand the condition since the symptoms differ with the person. Some ladies show one set of symptoms while othersa different set. The condition is worsened by unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise. Lavanya was also afflicted with unhealthy eating habits and dullness.
She is not the one to be blamed. The technology, which allows us to sit at one place and go through all the entertainment in the world, is at fault. Parents and teachers should push their kids to indulge in more physical activity. It shouldn’t always be as strict as a badminton class where the kids are compelled to keep their schedule and derive little to no pleasure from it. Parents should be enthusiastic enough to take their kids on regular outings and make exercise a family time. Let’s go back to Lavanya.
After I took her history, I came to know that she had irregular periods since the time she first started menstruating(menarche). Also due to her over eating habits and eternal love for sweets, she had gained a considerable weight. She hadalso become more irritable, dull and restless in the last few years. Her face had acne and overgrowth of hair (hirsutism) which contributed to her lack of confidence.
Luckily, her mom believes in holistic health treatments and natural medicines and hence decided to bring her daughter to me.
I knew if she switches to a healthier diet and exercise, her condition would improve rapidly. I suggested a few home remedies and lifestyle changes and the results were great.Lavanya and her mother could not be happier.
We may not know what causes PCOD, but we know this for sure that it grows rapidly in an unhealthy body. Hence it needs holistic health treatments. There are so many Lavanyas out there who are struggling with this condition. If you know someone around you, who is suffering from PCOD, I would like to share the remedies that Isuggested to Lavanya
